Editorial Policy

Our promise is simple: we recommend gear we’d trust in our own packs, trunks, RV drawers, and boat lockers. Here’s how we keep our reviews accurate, independent, and useful.

Independence and Integrity

  • No pay-for-play: We do not accept payment for reviews, inclusion, or ranking.
  • Affiliate neutrality: We may earn commissions from some links, but partners cannot influence our coverage or outcomes.
  • Access parity: Whether a product is purchased retail or supplied as a sample, it faces the same testing and scoring.

How We Choose What to Review

We shortlist products by scenario (bike/foot, car/tailgate, RV/boat, small-space living) and filter for fuel type, weight, cook area, pack size, latch integrity, stand stability, and corrosion resistance. We prioritize widely available fuels and modular ecosystems (windscreens, griddles, thermometers, cases) that travel well.

Testing Standards

We field-test using a standardized protocol: Portability Index (weight-to-cook-area, pack size/shape, latch integrity), timed setup, wind-loss tests at 10–20 mph, ignition reliability (piezo + manual backup), fuel availability scoring, heat distribution mapping, batch capacity, cleanup time, leak checks, and stability on sand/grass/uneven ground. Results are repeated and verified across venues.

Scoring and Recommendations

We publish scenario-matched scores and rank products by packability, setup speed, wind resilience, fuel access, and cleanup. “Best for” picks include tradeoffs and accessory pairing to create complete, grab-and-go kits.

Updates, Corrections, and Re-Tests

We revisit content when products change, warranties are updated, safety notices are issued, or reader feedback reveals new edge cases. Corrections are labeled with the date and summary of the change.

Product Sourcing and Conflicts

Samples may be provided by brands, purchased retail, or borrowed from readers. We disclose sample sources and return or donate items when appropriate. Team members must disclose any personal or financial conflicts and recuse themselves from coverage.

Safety and Responsible Use

We include guidance on fuel legality, fire bans, ventilation, surface protection, and safe stow/cooldown. Our recommendations assume responsible use; always follow manufacturer instructions and local regulations.

Environmental Considerations

We assess corrosion resistance, repairability, parts availability, and maintenance tips to extend lifespan and reduce total cost of ownership.

Feedback and Community Input

We welcome reader experiences, especially in extreme wind, altitude, or marine environments. Email [email protected]—your insights inform retests and updates.
